You may not even know your stressed - why I value labwork

Stress is often an underlying factor in many health issues, yet it may go unnoticed. That's why I place a high value on laboratory testing.

In Western society, the normalization of symptoms such as sleep disturbance, digestive distress, fatigue, hormonal imbalance, hypothyroidism, weight gain, low testosterone, and depressed immune function, are often associated with elevated cortisol levels caused by stress.

Cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, plays a crucial role in immune system function, blood sugar regulation, and metabolism. Imbalanced cortisol levels can negatively impact various health goals.

Individuals who have experienced childhood trauma and live in a state of sympathetic dominance may have a skewed perception of stress. In these cases, laboratory tests can be helpful in revealing cortisol levels. Chronic stress and sympathetic dominance make individuals more susceptible to the symptoms and conditions listed above.

Many health issues can be traced back to cortisol imbalances. Chronic stress has systemic effects on the thyroid, sex hormones, immune function, metabolism, and beyond.

For clients who I suspect have elevated cortisol levels, I perform the following tests:

  • Salivary cortisol testing

  • Thyroid panel

  • Sex hormone panel

  • Fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and A1C.
